Susie is captivated by the simple weaving process and specialises in making hedgerow baskets using prunings from different trees and hedges that she collects on local walks in South Wales where she has lived for most of her life. Colour and texture is of prime importance. The woods are not dyed, the variety of colour comes from the natural barks of many different common species. Susie also makes felt hangings and bags, using local fleece and dyed merino, combining it with carefully chosen pieces of driftwood, honeysuckle and ivy to create unique pieces of natural art. Sometimes her feltwork & weaving are combined. “Most baskets are made from willow, cane, rush or bamboo but it is quite possible to make a basket using a surprising variety of natural materials.” The rods are collected in the winter when the sap is down, left to mellow in a shady area of the garden for a short while and then woven before they become brittle; this can be days, weeks, or even months, depending on the material.
