Andrew Coomber
Landscape has always been the primary inspiration for Andrew’s work. Man’s interaction with the land, the marks he makes on it, combined with a fascination in geology and the 'anatomy' of the land, the interface between engineering and nature, have been of prime importance to him.
He works in the ‘no man’s land’ between ‘fine’ and ‘applied’ art in painting, sculpture, silversmithing and jewellery in a wide variety of media.
Maker of two Eisteddfod Crowns. Previous studios in Edinburgh, Manchester and now North Wales.
Formerly head of department of Jewellery Metalwork at North East Wales Institute (now Wrexham Glyndwr University).
3D pieces have developed from paintings, drawings and wall hung pieces. There are some tensions, both aesthetic and physical, between engineered elements and huge ancient forces. Some of them, together with some of the wearable pieces, are under physical tension. The brooch pin ‘Incline Cwm’ for example, are held in form by engineering fixings which if released would cause the works to spring apart.
