Birds in the wood

John and Marilyn Davies have carved and painted birds since the early seventies, prompted by a year-long stay in America. The impact there of the decoy tradition has made it the home of bird carving.

Near their home, the Clwyd has been a source of driftwood and inspiration. They look for perches, potential launch pads. The river is small, unpromising apparently but thinking about it they recall the chapel caretaker: meeting him the poet Waldo Williams commented that the place was a bit small. The proud reply was sharp: 'It's big inside though!'

John and Marilyn never tire of birds. There they go, soon gone – unless you make one. They say something of the interchange between stillness and movement in our lives.
