Ed Ap Llwyd

Eryri, North Wales

Ceramicist

Ed is a potter and ceramic artist, born and raised in Eryri, throwing pots in the foothills of Cadair Idris. He is now based in Oban, Scotland working as a production potter on the isle of Mull.

All of Ed’s work is inspired by life living in the mountains, the weather, flora and fauna, his ancestors work, the neolithic stone carvings, the pots of the Beaker people, Pictish, Brythonig and Gaelic myths and legends, in his own interpretation.

Ed’s signature style is defined by his masterful use of sgraffito. Sgraffito is a technique used to add decoration to ceramics which is created by scratching through the surface of the glaze before firing to reveal the contrasting layer of clay beneath.

“I very rarely plan a design; I'll have an idea or a feeling and see where the tools take me. This way I can let the images flow and develop as I carve. Clay is my canvas."
