Katherine Breaks

On display 3rd April - 5th May

Katherine Breaks (she/her) is a ceramicist recently graduated with a BA(hons) from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2025. Originally hailing from London, she has flown the nest and is figuring out life as a fledgeling and where her practice fits into the real world.

She enjoys functional, narrative and sculptural work, tessellating between the 2D and 3D by bringing pen to paper before delving into clay.

Artist Statement:

Motifs of childhood, memory, and mortality have slowly revealed themselves as a focus in my practice. They appear through drawing, dreams and daily rituals; summoned by seemingly out of place objects and held within silhouettes. The ‘Negative Space’ that is left behind after a death or event creates a visible void, and our imagination fills into the gaps.

I use small found objects such as seashells, feathers and teeth as vessels for memories that seem to intertwine themselves in the personal histories of each of us. These votive objects, steeped in a sense of ritual, combine in dialogue between white porcelain and richer, oxide-heavy clays to create a narrative frame to enshrine and hold onto the impressions and losses of our childhood memories.
