“I have lived in Aberystwyth since moving there as a child in 1966. I began painting in 1985 and held my first exhibition soon afterwards. From the outset, I was drawn to the expressive possibilities of colour, shape and visual impact.

During the 1990s, my work achieved a degree of commercial success when prints of my images were distributed worldwide by The Art Group Ltd for IKEA and Habitat. As an artist without formal training at the time, this was a great encouragement.

Driven by a desire to deepen my understanding of art and art history, I went on to study at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, specialising in drawing and painting, with a particular focus on landscape. I had completed both a BA and an MA in Fine Art by 2003, and subsequently taught undergraduate students at the School of Art, as well as community classes at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

During my studies, I was awarded a Royal Academy Landscape Scholarship for Travel. This helped to develop an approach to painting that remains central to my practice today: working en plein air to gather visual information and experience directly from the landscape, which I then reinterpret and develop into larger paintings in the studio.

I have exhibited widely across Wales and England and have undertaken public and private commissions. Now largely retired from teaching, I devote most of my time to painting, both outdoors and in my studio.

Travel and the exploration of different landscapes continue to inspire my work. Alongside the experience of unfamiliar places, I am fascinated by the possibilities of abstraction within landscapes I know well — how colour, shape, movement and memory can transform a familiar view into something more personal and expressive.

In recent years, I have spent more time travelling through North Wales, particularly Snowdonia, where some of my family live. Many of the paintings in this exhibition at Oriel Glasfryn were conceived during these journeys. They reflect my ongoing engagement with the landscape and my continuing exploration of how its essential qualities can be distilled and reimagined through painting.

I am delighted to bring these works together in this exhibition and to share something of this ongoing journey with you.”
